Meet The Coaches

Dan LeGage: Head Coach 

Coach LeGage enters his tenth season as Varsity coach of the Boy’s Basketball program, and his sixteenth year of coaching high school basketball in Maine.

    

Over the past seven seasons his teams have posted a record of 97 wins 43 loses (70%winning %) and an overall 9 year record of 109 wins and 68 loses(62%winning %).


In 2005 he guided the Rams to the Western Maine Championship before eventually falling to Hampden Academy in the State Championship. In the 2006 season, Coach LeGage’s team won its second straight Western Maine Championship and headed to another  State Championship game. This time the Rams would not be denied, capturing the first ever Boys Basketball State Championship in the school’s history. For his efforts Coach LeGage was voted "Winter Coach of the Year" by the Forecaster newspaper.

     

During each of the next five seasons Coach LeGage’s teams would again find themselves battling for top spots in the very competitive SMAA, before falling in the quarterfinal rounds during the 2007-2010 seasons. The 2010-2011 once again saw the Rams battling for a Western Maine Championship before losing to Bonny Eagle in the semifinal round.


Prior to arriving at Deering, Coach LeGage spent 5 years as Varsity assistant and Junior Varsity Coach at Portland High school.  His coaching experience also includes a one year stint with the St. Joseph’s College Men’s basketball program, in Standish Maine. 


Coach LeGage received his Bachelors of Science degree in Education from the University of Maine at Farmington and his Masters of Science in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine. 


While at UMF  he played for legendary Maine college basketball coach Dick Meader. Coach LeGage served as team captain both his Junior and Senior seasons. He was an All- Conference as well as an All Maine All-Star selection both his Junior and Senior seasons. During his collegiate playing career he totaled 1,368 points combined with 345 assists.   


    Coach LeGage currently teaches ninth grade Science at Deering and resides in Gorham with his wife Trisha, and their son Lucas.  



Todd Wing: Junior Varsity, Associate Head Coach

The Deering High Boys Basketball Program would like to welcome back Coach Todd Wing as he enters his fourth year as Junior Varsity Coach.  


During his four years, Coach Wing  has proven to be a valuable member of the program. As J.V. coach he has compiled an impressive 45 wins and 9 loses over the past four years. In addition to JV Coach, his responsibilities include overall player development, assisting Coach LeGage at the Varsity level and lead coach at the sub-varsity level. Coach Wing is also co-director of the Rams Summer basketball program and director of the very successful Rams JV Holiday Tournament.

Prior to arriving at Deering, Coach Wing  spent five seasons as an assistant coach at St. Joseph’s college in Standish Maine under current head Coach Rob Sanicola. While at St. Joe’s , Todd assisted with the planning of practice and the recruitment of student-athletes.

    

Coach Wing is a tireless worker, who brings enthusiasm to the Ram’s  staff. His efforts on and off the court are making an extremely positive impact.  

    

A native of Bryant Pond, Maine, Todd prepped at Telstar High School in Bethel under the guidance of head coach Mark Thurlow, where he was a four-year starter for the Rebels. An outstanding player, he was chosen All-Mountain Valley Conference during his career and was a participant in the State of Maine McDonald’s East/West All-Star Game.

    

Coach Wing graduated from St. Joseph’s College in  1999.  Now in his seventh year as a physical education teacher, Coach Wing is currently teaching at Windham Elementary School in Windham, Maine and works at Spring Harbor Hospital.


Todd resides in Portland with his wife Liz and their son Ronan and daughter Maren.



Scot Vachon: Varsity Assistant

The Deering High Boys Basketball program would like to welcome Scot Vachon as he enters his first year as a member of the Rams coaching staff. He brings his knowledge, enthusiasm, work ethic, and competitiveness to the bench in assisting Coach LeGage. Scot became involved in the Rams program after a two year stint at St. Joseph's College. During his time at St. Joe's, he was heavily involved in recruiting as well as player development, including a myriad of in-game duties. 

Coach Vachon was a three- year starter during his playing days at St. Joe's. He was a pivotal player during the Monks’ GNAC Championship run in 2009 and was named as the Tournament Most Valuable Player. He averaged 4.6 points, 3.8 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 97 career games while donning the Royal Blue and is listed among the program’s all-time leaders in assists (365) and steals (153).

Scot, a native of Schenectady, New York, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education Teacher Preparation. He also received his Master of Science in Education degree from Saint Joseph’s College.
He currently resides in Portland.


Josh Stowell: Varsity Assistant:

The Deering High Boys Basketball Program would like to welcome back Coach  Stowell as he enters his sixth season as a member of the Deering Rams coaching staff. He works closely with post players and in crucial in evaluating the Rams competition. In addition to scouting, Coach Stowell also is fulfills a multitude of in-game responsibilities. He has outstanding knowledge of the game and we are pleased to have him as a member of our coaching staff.

    

A 2005 graduate of Deering High School, Josh was a standout athlete in both basketball and baseball for the Rams. Josh demonstrates all the qualities of an outstanding leader as evidenced by him serving as team captain to the 2005 Western Maine Champion boys basketball team.  

Josh is currently finishing his degree at the University of Southern Maine. At USM Josh was a four year member of the most successful  baseball team in the Northeast. Josh currently resides in Portland.



Larry Nichols: First Team

The Deering High Boys Basketball Program would like to welcome back  Coach Nichols as he enters his eleventh season as a member of the boys basketball coaching staff.  


Coach Nichols provides a wealth of knowledge and support to the players and coaches of the boys basketball program.  In addition to coaching  basketball, Coach Nichols served as the boys Varsity Tennis coach from 1995-2004. During his tenure, his teams won 6 Western Maine Championships and 2 State Championships. Coach Nichols amassed an  impressive record of 115 wins and 12 losses during that time.


A graduate of Easton High School, Coach Nichols was a four year boys basketball varsity starter and team captain.  He was named to the All-County All Star team as well as the Eastern Maine All Tournament team.

    

Coach Nichols currently is the Technology education teacher at Deering and resides in Falmouth with his wife Melanie, and their daughter Mackenzie.


Brendan Conway: First Team 

The Deering High Boys Basketball Program would like to welcome back Brendan Conway for his eighth season as a member of the Deering High boys basketball coaching staff.  

    

A graduate of Deering High School, Coach Conway played 4 outstanding seasons for the boys basketball program serving as captain his senior season. After graduating from Deering, Brendan furthered his education at Bates College. He then went on to complete his masters degree at the University of Southern Maine.  

    

Brendan served as Varsity Boys Tennis Coach during the 2006 season where he guided the Rams to a perfect 13-0 record before falling to Lewiston in the State Championship. Brendan is also the Director of the Summer Fun Camp in the city of Portland. Brendan also served as Athletic Director for Deering High School during the 2007-2008 school year. Coach Conway returned in 2009 as head Tennis coach.


Coach Conway currently works at Maine Real Network and Cape Elizabeth High School. He resides in Cape Elizabeth.
